BLURRING THE WALL

2019

As one of London’s oldest and most colourful neighbourhoods, Soho has a long history, mixes various cultures and combines different elements from all over the world. Due to the above, the district has the complexity, which is a part of its charm. According to studio group research in the beginning, I realized that Soho is more than entertainment and also becomes a gathering place of the creatives, the media and the startups. Various co-working places for them have appeared in this district. So, there is a question occured to me: what is a co-working space to respond this certain environment?

The wall, as one of the most important architectural elements, is to define an area, clarify the boundary and provide shelter. It separates outside and inside, exterior and interior, public and private. But, the solid wall of the building may break the connection between different spaces or between building itself and public streets. It also reduce the potential interaction or communication, which makes people lose the opportunity to get more involved in Soho.

The idea of “blurring the wall” would change that. It is the method to echo Soho’s complexity and to enhance people’s interaction. The concept is to blur the wall’s solid and rigid character and to give it “flexible” property. Basically, the flexibility of the wall is considered from its potential inhabitability. The proposal is a co-working complex for startups and creatives in Soho. It aims to create the interaction between people working inside and people wandering outside, providing unique experiences or ideas for both of them. They experience Soho, become part of Soho and create new stories at the same time.
