WELFARE FACILITY

BA | Central Saint Martins

Year 3 Project

Studio 6 | Soho Stories

2019

The program focuses on the temporary situation for the site of co-working complex ("Blurring the Wall"). As a temporary welfare facility, it attempts to satisfy operatives’ daily demands before and after their construction work and aims to achieve spatial flexibility in limited spaces.

Towards a large project, site welfare should facilitate hundreds of workers for taking breaks and getting ready before work. This facility would face the large influx of workers in some certain spaces during the peak times. Therefore, how to deal with the increased numbers at peak time is the first question. Based on the situation of the facility, it will be removed in the future. How to achieve a longer life of it is the second question. To solve the appeared questions, the flexibility of the welfare facility would become a key consideration.

After understanding about operatives' daily requirements, the functions (such as registration area, canteen, changing rooms) could be divided as three parts: 'fixed', 'semi-flexible' and 'flexible'. There is a part of facility as the chosen area to further discuss the consideration of flexibility. It is also chosen for exploring a sustainable method of using materials in temporary installations. The whole program uses the common construction materials. It is assembled by concrete lego blocks and timber sliding panels with movable parts. The combination gives those materials a potential chance to be disassembled and be reused in the future.
