FUSE WITH MEMORY

2021

Our project,“FUSE with Memory”, is to rehouse an existing building for Fuse Arts Organisation in Bradford. As the highlight in diagram map, the five-storey building on the site runs through 46 Darley Street to 31 & 35 Piccadilly. We take a careful consideration of original conditions, and then aim to turn this old building into a gallery for citizens and art lovers, which contains enough exhibition space, art studio, library etc. Besides, we still retain our basic idea, which is same as Professional Studies 1 project: “bring the positive and bright impacts towards Bradford”.

Reserving the main structure, we added a steel frame structure to support the new roof and the new glass “box” built onto the top floor as an art studio. The use of glass can show our respect for the industrial history of Bradford and bring brightness and warmness to this street. The interpretation between pedestrians and the glowing glass volume above will be interesting when the night falls. The facade was reformed while adjusting the size of the windows and keeping bricks as the main material. Along with the glass, the traditional brick wall was given a new life.

The gallery will be a platform for art lovers as well as a home of artists. It will also be an impressive public space for citizens to enjoy art and learning from local history. We believe that the love of art shown in this project can bring new life to the community of Bradford.
